Anna loves this cartoon. I hope she doesn’t get any ideas:
Or in Wile E. Coyote’s case, the anvil.
I’ve recently introduced Anna to Road Runner cartoons, and as I re-watched them all with her I had a revelation: Wile E. Coyote is responsible for all the horrible things that happen to him. The Road Runner just zips along, minding his own business, stopping only occasionally to comment—via signage— on the futility of Wile E. Coyote’s pursuit. But the coyote never learns. He just moves on to the next ridiculous, ill-fated scheme.
It’s a striking parable on how violence begets violence, set in a universe in which the laws of physics have a definite moral preference. But even in this universe Jesus’ words are still true: “he who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.”—Matthew 26:52
