The words of our President yesterday expressing the profound sorrow of our nation and our support for the families of the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut:
Just as he did in Tuscon after another senseless shooting almost two years ago, the President spoke as a parent to other parents. At times like this, it doesn’t matter whether you voted for him or not, or whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or an Independent. This goes far deeper than politics. This is about our common humanity.
Many of us are parents, and all of us have been children. The difference is that we got to grow up. Those twenty kids never will:
Sing for them,
Little songbirds of God,
For their mothers
Cannot find them.
And God’s little flowers,
May you bloom all around
So that our children
May sleep happily.
—A paraphrase of last stanza of an old Polish folk song that closes the third movement of Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.
